Item DescriptionThe Jupiter was built in September 1868 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works of New York, along with the Storm, Whirlwind, and Leviathan. It made history as one of the two locomotives (along with the Union Pacific No. 119) to meet at Promontory Summit during the Golden Spike ceremony to commemorate the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad. This 4-4-0 locomotive was a wood burning engine was in service from 1869 until 1909 when it was scrapped. 65 years later, the National Park Service commissioned O'Connor Engineering Laboratories to build a replica of both the Jupiter and the 119. They were eventually completed in 1979 and began operations on may 10th of that year. 110 years after the Golden Spike Ceremony.
