Item Description

Millions of years ago most of the earth was covered with a wide variety of plants and woodlands. During the biological and geographical development of our earth deposits were formed from these plants and ancient woodlands which, due to the exclusion of air, pressure and drying out over the years, turned into coal and lignite. Whereas the origin of coal can be dated back to the carbonaceous era (approx. 280 to 340 million years ago), lignite or brown coal formed in the tertiary era (about 2.5 to 65 million years ago, therefore after the extinction of the dinosaurs). Due to the younger age of the lignite, brown coal deposits are found in Germany in seams up to a thickness of 70 m beneath an overburden up to 400 m thick. To uncover and remove these seams and to transport the brown coal the largest mobile machines in the world, such as this bucket wheel excavator, are used. Excavator 289 is used in the Hambach opencast mining area in the Rhineland between Cologne, Aachen and Dusseldorf. This machine is 200 m long and 80 m high with a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic metres (!!) of overburden or coal. Due to its heavy weight of 13,000 tonnes and its enormous size, excavator 289 was assembled directly on site in the 1970s (1974-77). The appliance was designed and built in Lubeck on the Baltic by O&K, Orenstein & Koppel AG, the oldest manufacturers of such equipment in the world. This giant is moved by 15 crawler units, each 3 m high and 3 m wide. 100 electric motors with a total capacity of 17,000 kW (22,670 hp) enable 289 to move at a speed of 600 m per hour. The excavator is controlled from 2 operator's cabs, one at a height of 30 m near to the 22 m high bucket wheel, the other on the parallel loader with which the coal or overburden removed is distributed onto kilometres of conveyor flights.
